Sinusitis is an inflammation of tissues lining the Sinus cavities present in and around the nasal cavity. In healthy conditions the Sinuses are filled with air. However, when the tissue surrounding the Sinus gets inflamed and swollen, the Sinus cavities get filled with fluid. If the fluid gets infected it can result in blockage of the hollow Sinus cavities. The infections can be caused by viruses, bacteria or in some cases fungi. Conditions such as common cold, allergic rhinitis, nasal polyps (small growths in the lining of the nose), etc. can cause Sinusitis. Increased intake of dry, oily, spicy, or too hot or too cold foods, and foods that are heavy, indigestible and incompatible foods cause impairment of all three doshas. Other factors responsible for this condition are suppressing natural urges of tears and vomiting, exposure to cold or dusty and dry weather, staying awake till late in the night, and sleeping in the daytime.
Sinusitis is termed as “Dushta Pratishyaya” or “Peenas” in Ayurveda. Ayurveda calls nasal cavity as ´shirodwar’ that is the entry point to the skull cavity and proper functioning of brain and its various parts. Thus any obstruction in this pathway is aggressively treated. That we called Sinustis. The pathophysiology of nasal disorders including sinusitis is elaborately described and its symptoms and signs are described in the chapters of nasa rog and shiro rog. According to Ayurveda it is a kapha vitiated disease. Ayurveda drain the mucous deposited in the sinuses, clears the infection and prevent the new mucous formation. Nasya with Swedan helps to remove the congestion and relieve from the symptoms. Usually 4-6 months Ayurveda medicines and treatments are sufficient enough for complete cure of sinusitis. Further maintenance is done with healthy life style and healthy eating habits.
